Corporate Social Responsibility

While we are a global corporation, our employees pride themselves on being active participants in the thousands of communities our work touches around the world. At Gallagher, we believe that all people are important. As our late Chairman Robert E. Gallagher, Sr. wrote in The Gallagher Way, “We all need one another. We are all cogs in a wheel.” The Gallagher team is passionate about making a difference in our local communities, and this shows through our offices’ ongoing charitable works.

At Gallagher, we help our communities in three ways:

  • The Gallagher Matching Gift Program
The Arthur J. Gallagher Foundation Matching Gift Program was created in 1994 to allow employees to “double the difference” in their communities. The program matches employee donations of up to $1,000 per employee, per year, to a variety of 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, including public and private educational institutions, art and cultural organizations, religious institutions, environmental concerns, youth groups, social service agencies and health organizations focused on specific illnesses.

2009 was a generous year for Gallagher’s Matching Gift Program. Charities received donations of nearly $950,000 from employee matching requests made to the Arthur J. Gallagher Foundation. Nearly 1,400 employees participated in the program.  Also, certain special matches are established for catastrophes.  For instance, in the wake of the deadly earthquake that devastated Haiti in January 2010, Gallagher established a relief fund as part of its Matching Gifts Program, matching checks between the amounts of $25 and $500 donated to the International Red Cross and earmarked for Haitian earthquake victims by employees.  A total of nearly $260,000 was donated through this match.

  • Community Outreach
Helping others, both inside and outside the office, is an important part of Gallagher’s culture. Our hundreds of offices and thousands of employees around the world are involved with many charitable organizations, donating time and energy to needy local causes.  In addition, in 2009 and 2010, Gallagher has supported the “Fighting Cancer The Gallagher Way” initiative, which asks each of Gallagher’s offices to participate in a cancer-related charitable event.   This initiative has driven our offices to work together for excellent cancer-related causes around the world.

  • Gallagher’s “Going Green” initiative
We believe in protecting our Earth as well. Gallagher is doing its part to become a more eco-conscious company through our internal “Going Green with Gallagher” initiatives. Employees around the world are looking for unique ways to make their offices more earth-friendly.

Gallagher is a founding owner of two privately owned, clean-energy ventures—Chem-Mod LLC and C-Quest Technologies LLC—both of which own rights, information and technology for the reduction of unwanted emissions created during the combustion of coal.  Chem-Mod's technology reduces mercury, sulfur dioxide and other toxic emissions at coal-fired power plants.  C-Quest's technology reduces carbon dioxide emissions created by burning fossil fuels.

At Gallagher, we genuinely care about the people we work with and for. Sincere compassion is a value on which this company was built, and we’re honored to have the opportunity to make a positive difference in our communities.
