The Gallagher report Management Liability Insurance Global Market Update Dec 2022 examines factors influencing the directors and officers' (D&O) liability market and how international trends have translated to different regions, including Australia.

In good news for businesses worldwide, the cost of premiums is stabilising in many areas and industries, but some constraints remain. The report looks at the conditions affecting pricing and capacity, especially the impact of new entrants to the D&O market on the record-high premiums seen in the previous two years due to increased insurer competition.

A key side effect of recent geopolitical instability and macroeconomic uncertainty has been a reduction in the number of initial public offerings (IPOs) by businesses listing on stock exchanges, a deficit that sharpened further competition among new and existing insurers in the D&O space.

However, some industry sectors or businesses with adverse claims history may still find placement challenging. Communication between brokers, clients and the market will remain key to achieving management liability coverage.
