Gallagher

Assistant Vice President

Chicago
I love putting together the deal.

How I got started

I was a member of the Summer Internship Program for two summers. What I really liked was how I was exposed to every aspect of the company and got an in-depth view of what my career would be like if I accepted a job with Gallagher after graduation. I looked at it like test-driving a car. When I was in college, what I enjoyed most was business. There wasn't really one particular aspect I liked best - finance versus marketing or accounting versus sales. I just liked learning about different businesses as a whole.

I particularly loved the classes that involved case studies about a company. So through the internship program, I realized that at Gallagher that could be my job every day. I could work with all these different business and companies, delving inside and learning all about them to better figure out how we could best serve them. To me, this was much better than the jobs that other companies had to offer - which were basically just concentrating on one area, practice or division of a single business.

What gets me going every day

I was an athlete in high school, and I've always been a competitive person, so that's one of the reasons I'm so drawn to Gallagher. We're a very competitive and aggressive sales company. So every day, that's really what I'm trying to do, I'm trying to win. I love the competing aspect of it. I love putting together the deal that's going to give our client all they need at the best possible cost, and beating the other guy at the other company who's trying to do the same thing. I also enjoy the pace "the action," I guess you could call it. I could be at my desk and in the course of a half an hour I could get 35 emails and four phone calls about a number of different things. I really thrive on that.

What our culture means to me

I remember that before I joined Gallagher I would hear companies talk about their culture, and it really just sounded like a buzzword to me. But now that I'm here, I realize that there is something special and unique about the Gallagher culture. You know that everybody here is looking out for your best interests.

People genuinely want other people to succeed and I know that doesn't happen at a lot of companies - especially large sales organizations, where people can be wrapped up in their own deals all the time. But here at Gallagher, I know I can go down the hall and ask another broker 10 different questions on this, and for help with that, and he'll take the time to help me even though he has no stake in it or it's not going to help him out in any way. Overall, I think this is a company that likes to win, likes to celebrate, but most importantly, likes to celebrate each other's wins.

Family business

You could say I owe my career at Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. to my grandparents. The reason I considered the Summer Internship Program in the first place was because my grandfather worked in insurance. And I always remember my grandma telling me that there was never a day in his life that he would wake up and complain about going to work. So I always thought that, if that's how insurance is, that's what I want too. And at Gallagher, that's what I have. I can't think of a better industry or company that I would rather work for.

Area President

New Orleans
We're a brokerage company run by brokers.

My current role

I currently serve as Area President of our New Orleans office and a few satellite offices, while also serving as the Managing Director for the company's Marine Practice.

How I got started

I had just graduated college and took a job with a local insurance agency in my hometown, which I thought was just going to be a temporary stopover because I intended to go to law school. Well, within a year, the insurance agency was acquired by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. This was quite a departure from our local agency and I was quite impressed by all the resources, growth potential, and commitment and investment Gallagher showed to their employees. So much so, that I forgot about law school and accepted the company's offer to go to London to train for six weeks. And here it is, 14 years later, and I couldn't be more blessed or happier with my decision.

Who succeeds here

You have to be a self-starter. We are not a company of micro-managers. To succeed here, you have to be a go-getter who not only knows what you want, but has the drive to go after it.

What gets me going every day

It has to be the unknown and unexpected. I'm a very methodical person. I get up at the exact same time every morning and have the same morning routine that includes doing my best to pre-plan and script each workday. Well, wouldn't you know it, there hasn't been a single day yet where I have been able to stick to that script. It's never dull here. Never boring. I get to work in this innovative and entrepreneurial environment that allows me to keep growing and expanding the enterprise and my practice. In fact, one of the first marine accounts I ever wrote is now one of the largest vessel operators in the world today.

Why I've stayed for so long

It's because we're a brokerage company run by brokers. Pat Gallagher, our President and CEO, understands my job. And I'm not talking about Area President or Practice Managing Director. I'm talking about being a producer out on the streets driving revenue for the company every day. He understands it because he has done it. Not many companies can say that most of upper management has risen through the ranks. That means they get it. And because they get it, they know exactly what everyone needs to do their jobs and be successful and they make sure we have it. Oh, and that bonus check I got last week may have something to do with it as well.

Gallagher

Area Vice President

Houston
What I do every day really matters.

My current role

I'm an Area Vice President in our Houston office working exclusively in the healthcare sector.

What gets me going every day

I truly feel that, with the work we do here, we are able to help people, and that's important to me. In our office, we work primarily with physicians and physician offices, and by covering all their insurance needs, we are able to relieve their burden and free them up to do what they do best - and that's help people get better. So I feel that what I'm doing every day really matters, and in my own way I'm helping to make the world a better place.

Who succeeds here

To me, it's someone who's aggressive and wants to win. The sky's the limit here. There's nothing that's going to hold you back. We're an entrepreneurial sales organization at our core, so I tell potential recruits that as long as you do your part, Gallagher's going to back you every step of the way. If you have an idea and it makes sense, we're going to do all we can to help you make it happen.

What our culture means to me

I always say that the culture of the company is like a family, and I think that's rare for such a large organization. In fact, that was one of the things I was worried about, because I came to Gallagher through an acquisition. We were a small office, and we genuinely operated like a family. So I was afraid that we were going to lose that, and I was expecting everything to be much more corporate and impersonal. But it hasn't been like that at all. We have maintained that small, family-like environment, because, as I've come to learn, that's part of the overall Gallagher culture as well. So we now have all the leverage, tools and resources of a global industry leader behind us, but we still feel like a close, tight-knit office and company. It's really like having the best of both worlds.

The Power of Gallagher

Being part of the Gallagher team has opened up opportunities I feel I never would have had otherwise. I'm able to go after accounts that an independent broker or smaller brokerage firm could never dream of. I feel our offerings, reach, reputation for customer service, resources, tools and training are unmatched in the industry. This was especially brought home to me recently after attending a company event in Las Vegas called "The Power of Gallagher."

Essentially, this was where representatives from around the world came together to put on an internal trade show highlighting the capabilities, talents, resources, etc. that exist solely within our own company. The networking opportunities this created were fantastic. I've never heard of another company that would say, "Hey, we're going to put on an internal trade show so you can meet the rest of your company, see what they do, and then see where you can all go from there."

Scott Vallimont

Gallagher

Technology Director

Mt. Laurel
The company wants new ideas.

My current role

As the Eastern Region Technology Director, I’m responsible for overseeing all the technical projects for my region, procuring all new technologies and keeping everything up to date. One of the things I like most about being at the Director level is working with my team and helping grow their careers. At Gallagher, it’s not about pre-determined career paths – if you have an interest in something, the company and management are very accommodating in letting you pursue it.

A great day

One of my best days at Gallagher had nothing to do with my job. The company sets aside a few days a year where employees can volunteer and give back to the community. I had a great time helping build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Arthur J. Gallagher is truly a company where everybody pitches in and helps out at work, so it’s no wonder the turnout for these community service days is very high.

What gets me going every day

It has to be the work environment. In all honesty, being in technology, the work I do here isn’t that much different from the two other companies where I’ve worked, but the approach is. By that, I mean you have a lot of power, flexibility and autonomy here. You’re not just an employee doing a job a certain expected way, which is what I was doing before I came to Gallagher. Here, the company is truly interested in your input: they want new ideas, they want you to think “outside the box,” and they create an environment where you’re encouraged and not afraid to try new things. I remember being here one night at ten o’clock, and it wasn’t because I had to be, or was scrambling to meet a deadline – it was because I wanted to be. I got so caught up and was so enjoying what I was doing that I just lost track of time.

What’s different about Arthur J. Gallagher

I really think it’s the people and the personal nature of the company. I got my first indication of this on my interview. I remember I was very impressed that they didn’t just want to talk about my skill sets, which in technology interviews is usually all that’s discussed and focused on. But at Gallagher, they were trying to get to know me as a person. That really meant something to me and was one of the main reasons that I accepted the job. Gallagher is a very friendly and people-oriented company. There’s definitely a positive energy here.

What our culture means to me

It’s a very supportive culture. The training and growth opportunities are incredible, and people here are all working toward a common goal for our clients and each other. I remember I was doing a technical wiring job one day, and an Area President, who had nothing to do with technology, asked me if I needed help. Then he pitched right in, and the job went by so much more quickly. The culture is also one of listening to the employees. The company is always interested in getting feedback, and better yet, actually acting on the feedback to make the company and culture here stronger.

Gallagher

Regional Multinational Practice Leader

Miami
It’s a very exciting time at Arthur J. Gallagher.

My current role

As the Regional Multinational Practice Leader for the Southeast Region, my main responsibility is developing new business internationally.

What gets me going every day

I love going after the large international accounts. It is a very exciting time at Arthur J. Gallagher as we expand our business globally. Gallagher has an exceptional reputation as a major player domestically, and we are now aggressively growing our global reach and international capabilities every day. The opportunities this creates are tremendous.

What our culture means to me

The culture at Gallagher is all about being part of a great team. That may not sound like a big deal, but it really is. I’ve noticed that in our industry, the norm for people tends to be very isolated, to be out for themselves, to only be worrying about their “deals.” It’s just not like that here. We're a company of driven and competitive people, yet we help each other out and share in each other's successes.

What I like the most

It’s a performance-driven, results-oriented atmosphere, yet at the same time it’s very supportive. I also like the diversity of our offerings. We've established cross-divisional teams of experts in numerous industry niches and practice areas, ranging from agribusiness to aviation, to the entertainment industry and higher education. We’re in many markets the other players just aren’t in. Gallagher, and Gallagher employees, have a stellar reputation in the industry. Our professionals are viewed as industry thought leaders who are firmly focused on client satisfaction.

What’s different about Arthur J. Gallagher

Gallagher is – and has always been – a family-run business, and that’s evident in the way we do business and treat people. Here, you feel like you’re part of an extended family. You’re more than a work colleague. People genuinely care about each other and want to help you succeed. At the other companies I worked for, I didn’t feel that. I felt like just an employee.

Robby White

Gallagher

Area President

Houston
If you're not growing, you're going backwards.

My first impressions

I was accepted into the Summer Internship Program, and I didn't really know what to expect. There's this perception about insurance out there of the door-to-door or the used car salesman kind of approach. But I learned very early on in my internship that that's not true here. Gallagher deals with very large and sophisticated companies and is helping them manage their critical risk, whether it be from a property and casualty standpoint or an HR and benefits consulting standpoint.

My current role

I think my role of Branch Manager - Area President is one of the best this company has to offer. Every day is different. One minute I could be involved with strategic planning for the office or mentoring new employees, and then the next I'm meeting with top customers, sitting in the boardroom with the CEO and CFO, helping them with decisions that will affect the lives of all their employees and the direction of their company going forward.

What gets me going every day

It's the entrepreneurial spirit and environment that the company fosters and promotes. Gallagher gives us the tools, training, resources, best practices, etc, that we need, but at the same time we have that freedom and power at the local branch level to make the decisions, and try new and innovative ways to grow the business and be successful.

What our culture means to me

In a way, the culture is why I chose to continue my career with Gallagher after the Summer Internship Program. I remember, at the end of the program, a veteran producer put his arm around me and said, "Stick with me, kid - I'm going to make you successful." That meant so much me, and it embodies what the culture at Gallagher is all about. It's about going out of your way to help people, and invest your time in their careers and development. This happens every day and throughout the entire company, and I think it's why so many people stay so long and spend their entire careers here. And now that I'm established here, one of the things I'm most proud of is seeing how successful the people that I've hired and helped along the way have become.

What the future holds

The key to Gallagher's success is that we are always growing. In today's world, if you're not growing, then you're going backwards. And as long as the company continues to grow and evolve, that means more opportunities for everyone.

Pamela Brown

Gallagher

Human Resources Director

Northeast Region
Your job is what you make it.

How I got started

I was actually working in HR for a company that was a client of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. So I knew Gallagher from a customer's perspective and was impressed with how they did business, their stellar reputation for client service and how they treated people. I also noticed how happy and fulfilled the Gallagher team that serviced our account seemed to be. I asked around and learned that they treat employees as well as they treat their clients. So when I decided it was time to move on, even though I had multiple other offers, I chose Gallagher because they seemed to top the list for everything I was looking for.

My current role

As a Human Resources Director, I touch every aspect of talent management, from training, recruitment and engagement to performance management and succession planning. No day is ever the same for me, which is one of the reasons I love my job. One day I could be working on putting together a comprehensive training program for a whole branch, and the next I'm working with one individual employee developing their career plan. I know that a lot of our competitors and other companies tend to have an assembly line mentality and pigeonhole employees into just one role or path. At Gallagher, it's not like that. We believe your job is what you make it.

What our culture means to me

Our company attracts hard working people with strong values. We have these 25 shared values called The Gallagher Way. And these are not just words written down on paper; our people live them every day. Every one cares about each other here and cares about our clients and doing the right thing. Although we're a large company with over 13,000 employees, we have a small-company, family-like environment.

What's different about Gallagher

We're a company of experts. Everyone is not only encouraged, but highly supported to grow professionally and become as well-versed as possible in their field. There's a spirit of autonomy that exists here. The company wants you to have ideas about our industry, growing our business and your career. I like the fact that every employee has a voice and the opportunity to become the best that they can be at Gallagher.

What the future holds

I feel like there's no ceiling at Gallagher, both for the company and my career. We are always growing, whether it is through acquisition or recruitment. So as my region continues to get bigger and stronger every year, talent management's role becomes increasingly more important, and that means greater opportunities and challenges for everyone involved.

Stephanie Phillips

Gallagher

Director of Concur Administration

Chicago
We’re all in it together here.

What initially intrigued you about Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.?

I have worked for a number of companies, including a few of Arthur J. Gallagher’s competitors, and I can truly say that there’s a difference in management style here. When I interviewed at Gallagher I was looking to get into more of shared services environment. I immediately felt comfortable and at ease here. I knew it was the right fit. This position provides me with an opportunity to travel and work globally within the organization and offers the possibility to both develop my career and advance within the industry.

How do you feel Gallagher compares to other employers in the industry?

At Gallagher one of the biggest things that keeps me here, and is different than other employers in the industry, is the senior leadership team. Due to their leadership, I feel secure in my role and have autonomy in the way I work. They are also very family-oriented, with an emphasis on work-life balance, which is important to me.

What is one of the things you like the most about your role here?

It would have to be that I am part of building this great system—Concur. I am part of bettering Concur and helping to improve it to create more efficiency for Gallagher. I don’t have any direct staff in my role, but I am part of something big, and supporting a system which the entire organization utilizes.

How would you describe Gallagher's culture?

To me, the culture is supportive and relaxed. The Gallagher Way drives our culture and diversity, making it a good place to work for so many nationalities and diversities. People gravitate here because of how the employees are treated and supported in their roles. This is the reason many of us have long tenures at AJG—it ties back to the fact that we are appreciated and recognized for our work.

How do you see your future at Gallagher?

I plan on being here until I retire. Right now I am finishing up school and see nothing but good things ahead. I enjoy working for my manager, Cara, and I am hoping to accomplish a lot this coming year and continue to have an impact in my role.

You were recently promoted. Can you talk to what types of opportunities Gallagher provides in regards to moving up in the company?

Senior leadership recognizes employees for a job well done and appreciates a strong work ethic. If you get in front of people and do a good job, it will be recognized and you will be rewarded.

If you had one piece of advice for someone coming into a similar role at Gallagher, what would it be?

Be open, ask questions and be yourself.

Zeb Holt

Gallagher

Area President

South Florida
We’re continually coming up with new products and services.

How I got my start

In college, I was interested in commodity trading and stocks, and I thought my career would be in investment banking. I didn't really know much about Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. or the insurance industry, but after meeting with representatives on campus, I had a gut feeling that this company could have everything I was looking for, so I accepted a slot in the Summer Internship Program. Well, it turns out my gut was right on. The rotational nature of the program exposed me to all aspects of the company, and the more I learned and saw, the more I knew Gallagher was for me.

You get to work with producing brokers as they go about their jobs. And what I noticed, and what appealed to me, was the independent and entrepreneurial nature of the job and company. Two people could approach similar situations in two completely different ways, and both would wind up successful. So after my nine weeks, I was completely sold on Gallagher. So much so that in my senior year I didn't set up a single interview or entertain other offers from other companies.

My current role

I am the Area President for South Florida and Managing Director of the Gallagher Alternative Risk Niche. I lead a highly specialized team of commercial and public-entity retail brokers based in southern Florida as well as leading Gallagher's alternative risk solutions niche practice group.

My growth and advancement

After the Summer Internship Program, I spent four years building up a book of business with one of our retail units. Then, thanks to my hard work and success, I was approached with the opportunity to go to Artex in a leadership position. I would say that in that aspect, I'm not unique. I'm kind of the typical success story that happens every day at Gallagher - you start out as a college intern with no real knowledge and then, through hard work and growing your book of business, all these great opportunities present themselves.

At Gallagher, it really is your accomplishments that matter most. If you look at other companies within our industry, I think my position is normally held by someone with many more years of experience. But because of my track record, the company tapped me for advancement despite my age and, I have to say, that says a lot about the company and makes for a really exciting and fulfilling place to work.

What gets me going every day

It has to be the challenge. I think with great opportunities come great expectations. We're constantly pushing ourselves to do the best job we possibly can for our clients every single day. And every day our clients' businesses are changing, so we have to keep up. We're also a very innovative division within a company that's known for innovation. We're like the lead dogs, continually coming up with new products and services and introducing them into the marketplace - so that's very exciting.

What our culture means to me

Today, we're a global operation with more than 16,000 employees worldwide, so you wouldn't think you could maintain or enjoy a consistent culture across the board. But, surprisingly, that's not the case at Gallagher. I believe that our culture - and by that I mean basically how we treat people, both internally and our clients - is our secret sauce and our competitive advantage in the marketplace. We're a huge, globally successful company, but you wouldn't know it by our interactions. Every office has a warm, close, tight-knit feel to it, and there's a collaborative spirit that dictates and defines how we do business with each other and with clients.
