How I got started
I was a member of the Summer Internship Program for two summers. What I really liked was how I was exposed to every aspect of the company and got an in-depth view of what my career would be like if I accepted a job with Gallagher after graduation. I looked at it like test-driving a car. When I was in college, what I enjoyed most was business. There wasn't really one particular aspect I liked best - finance versus marketing or accounting versus sales. I just liked learning about different businesses as a whole.
I particularly loved the classes that involved case studies about a company. So through the internship program, I realized that at Gallagher that could be my job every day. I could work with all these different business and companies, delving inside and learning all about them to better figure out how we could best serve them. To me, this was much better than the jobs that other companies had to offer - which were basically just concentrating on one area, practice or division of a single business.
What gets me going every day
I was an athlete in high school, and I've always been a competitive person, so that's one of the reasons I'm so drawn to Gallagher. We're a very competitive and aggressive sales company. So every day, that's really what I'm trying to do, I'm trying to win. I love the competing aspect of it. I love putting together the deal that's going to give our client all they need at the best possible cost, and beating the other guy at the other company who's trying to do the same thing. I also enjoy the pace "the action," I guess you could call it. I could be at my desk and in the course of a half an hour I could get 35 emails and four phone calls about a number of different things. I really thrive on that.
What our culture means to me
I remember that before I joined Gallagher I would hear companies talk about their culture, and it really just sounded like a buzzword to me. But now that I'm here, I realize that there is something special and unique about the Gallagher culture. You know that everybody here is looking out for your best interests.
People genuinely want other people to succeed and I know that doesn't happen at a lot of companies - especially large sales organizations, where people can be wrapped up in their own deals all the time. But here at Gallagher, I know I can go down the hall and ask another broker 10 different questions on this, and for help with that, and he'll take the time to help me even though he has no stake in it or it's not going to help him out in any way. Overall, I think this is a company that likes to win, likes to celebrate, but most importantly, likes to celebrate each other's wins.
You could say I owe my career at Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. to my grandparents. The reason I considered the Summer Internship Program in the first place was because my grandfather worked in insurance. And I always remember my grandma telling me that there was never a day in his life that he would wake up and complain about going to work. So I always thought that, if that's how insurance is, that's what I want too. And at Gallagher, that's what I have. I can't think of a better industry or company that I would rather work for.
