Whatever the approach, it has to be different. It has to be personal. It has to be connected to what’s meaningful for the employee.

Think safety first

‘Making everyone feel valued is a very personalised experience,’ agrees Lindsey Sanford, Chief of Staff at global cybersecurity leader Palo Alto Networks. ‘It’s about recognising the language of the individual, and how we each perceive and receive recognition and appreciation.

‘One of the first things that I would say to do when showing that your employees are valued is to cover the fundamentals, the core of what their worries are centred on – and that’s stability. Because, regardless of the psychology that you adhere to, most employees need to know that they are safe and secure.

‘We just kept pressing that message over and over again [throughout the pandemic] at Palo Alto Networks; because until our people heard that message, everything else was just noise. And it’s that feeling of confidence that empowered employees to continue delivering against their goals and milestones.’
