  • Contamination Risks: What to Do? [ Article]

    Do you think that food contamination and product recall issues are just for trendy fast food restaurants and meat packers? Think again – companies across the food supply chain must consider protecting themselves against potential financial disaster with product contamination and recall insurance coverage. Be it accidental contamination, malicious product tampering, or mislabeling errors, a food safety incident and resulting recall can be a company’s biggest exposure, damaging to its brand and reputation.

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued its final Preventive Controls for Human Food rule. This final rule will require FDA-regulated food facilities to re-examine their food safety programs, in particular their product recall plans, in a push to be compliant with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).     After several delays and missed deadlines, and an unprecedented level of public comment and outreach by FDA to industry, several significant rules required by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) are now being finalized and issued. In mid-September 2015, the FDA published the Preventive Controls for Animal Food rule, which provides baseline Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs) for producing safe animal food and which take into account the unique aspects of the animal feed industry, providing flexibility for the diversity of facilities in this space. The rule also requires such animal feed facilities to implement a written food safety system.

    A pork and beef processor in Wisconsin was inspected by OSHA compliance officers, and the ownership received willful, repeat and serious citations―with fines totaling $450,000. Following recommendations for location changes and efforts by its Gallagher safety consultant, the result was vastly improved.
