Many employers with locations in the path of Hurricanes Irma and Maria have not only been directly affected by the storms, but are also faced with important benefit issues related to the employer’s affected employees, as well as, employees with family members impacted by the devastation. Below is an overview of relevant guidance meant to assist employers in Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands with making decisions and managing employee-benefits considerations in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Special tax relief and assistance are available to tax payers in those areas declared by the Federal Government as Presidential Disaster Areas. All of Florida and Puerto Rico have been designated as disaster areas. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, Presidential Disaster Areas are the islands of St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. In Georgia, 159 counties have been designated.
