Self-employed insurance can be tailored to your needs, whether you work on your own or employ other members of staff.

Why might I need business insurance when I'm self-employed or a sole trader?

Many people choose to be self-employed for a number of reasons, including freedom and flexibility. But it's important to make sure that your business has adequate protection - especially if you deal with members of the public, including delivery people, customers, and suppliers.

Self-employment insurance is there to help protect your finances if a customer or member of the public gets physically harmed, or their property is damaged due to your business activities. Legal fees and compensation can be costly, and if you don't have self-employed insurance in place, you could be liable for absorbing all the costs.

Self-employed insurance can provide cover for legal fees, as well as compensation in the event of a claim by a customer or an employee.

How much does sole trader insurance cost?

The cost of self-employed insurance will depend on a few factors, including:

  • Your occupation: Manual workers such as plumbers and builders generally pay more for self-employed insurance than clerical workers like graphic designers and writers. This is because their work is more likely to physically affect members of the public.
  • The type of jobs you do: The amount you pay for cover will also depend on the risk level associated with the type of jobs you take on. If you work in large and busy public buildings, you will often have to pay more than if you work mostly in your own home.
  • The size of your business operation: Your turnover is one of the main factors that providers will assess to work out how much you will pay for your self-employment insurance.
  • Your claims history: If you've made business insurance claims in the past, you may have to pay more towards your self-employed insurance cover.
