The APAC Market Watch report highlights trends, challenges and opportunities shaping the industry across the 14 markets we track in the Asia-Pacific region.
Non-life markets in Asia-Pacific continued to show their resilience and diversity in the past year. Although non-life premium growth decelerated on average across the region, it remains healthy and attractive in a global context. The slowdown is partly a reflection of cyclical pricing developments in some of the more mature markets and comes on the back of improved underwriting performance. Nevertheless, the structural growth outlook for the region remains compelling, reflecting comparatively low insurance penetration rates in many markets, and GDP growth that compares favorably to the global average.
The report identifies five key themes shaping the near-term trajectory of APAC's non-life insurance industry. We set out how insurers are rising to meet these challenges, and how Gallagher Re can support clients to turn challenges into opportunities.
1. An uncertain macro and geopolitical environment
Economic growth across APAC strengthened in 2025, with mature and emerging markets both expanding faster than the previous year. However, stronger economic growth did not translate into higher non-life premium growth. Ongoing geopolitical tensions, energy market volatility and global trade uncertainty continue to create headwinds, making agility, disciplined growth and capital management increasingly important.
2. "Super" El Niño in control
A potentially record-breaking El Niño may reshape the region's risk landscape, altering the timing, frequency and severity of natural catastrophe events. While reduced rainfall may lessen flood exposure in some areas, risks from drought, extreme heat, wildfires and shifting cyclone activity are increasing. Lower rainfall doesn't equate to lower catastrophe risk, with severe, localized events still capable of generating significant insured losses.
3. Insurers internationalize in search of profitable growth
Improved profitability and stronger capital positions are encouraging insurers to look beyond domestic markets for new growth opportunities. This is putting pressure on management teams to find alternative growth opportunities. Although this may lead to consolidation in some markets, insurers are increasingly looking abroad for growth.
4. AI moves from operational tool to insurable risk
Artificial intelligence is moving rapidly from experimentation into real-world business adoption across the region. Demand is growing for new insurance solutions covering AI-related liabilities, while investment in data centers, semiconductors and supporting infrastructure is creating additional opportunities for insurers. As the technology evolves, insurers must adapt underwriting approaches, policy wordings and risk management frameworks to keep pace with changing exposures.
5. A reinsurance market softening offers strategic options for clients
Strong reinsurer earnings and growing inflows of alternative capital continue to increase capacity across the market. Although this may lead to further rate softening, the greater opportunity lies in reshaping program structures to achieve broader protection, more resilient earnings and increased capital efficiency.
