Who's covered?

All RPN, RN and RN(EC) members in good standing are covered.

What does the policy insure against?

The policy covers errors and omissions insurance (damages, defence interest and costs) and legal expenses.

SEIU Healthcare nurses insurance coverage

  • $1M professional liability for each loss, per RPN and RN
  • $5M professional liability for each loss, per RN(EC)
  • $25,000 disciplinary action cost reimbursement for each loss, per nurse
  • $50,000 per year per nurse, for costs, charges and expenses (excluding salary) incurred in defending against criminal charges laid in Canada, provided the nurse is proven innocent.

Nurses who register with SEIU Healthcare before April 1 each year, and those new to SEIU Healthcare who register within 30 days of being hired, qualify for enhanced insurance limits:

  • $2M professional liability for each loss, per RPN and RN
  • $5M professional liability for each loss, per RN(EC)
  • $35,000 disciplinary action cost reimbursement for each loss, per nurse
  • $50,000 per year per nurse, for costs, charges and expenses (excluding salary) incurred in defending against criminal charges laid in Canada, provided the nurse is proven innocent.

Policy extensions include:

  • Extended reporting period of 36 months in the event of retirement, death, disability or cessation of practice
  • Defence costs for alleged criminal acts (excluding abuse): $50,000 aggregate
  • Loss of earnings endorsement: $750 per day
  • Therapy and counselling: $50,000 per subject ($250,000 aggregate)
  • Punitive damages: $100,000 per claim ($100,000 aggregate)
  • Coroner's inquest: $50,000 per proceeding
  • Reimbursement of defence costs in the event of a successful defence against abuse: $50,000 aggregate

Exclusions

  • Midwifery
  • Knowing of incident prior to applying for coverage
  • Intentional damage
  • Losses covered by other insurance
  • Physical, psychological or emotional abuse, molestation or harassment committed by, at the direction of, or with the knowledge of any member
  • Failure of a member to prevent physical, psychological or emotional abuse, molestation or harassment

Claims period

The policy covers incidents occurring after the coverage begins. When members are notified that they have committed a fault, error, omission or act of neglect while providing health or social services in the nursing profession, they must report the notification to the insurer by March 31 of that year.
