Gallagher is an insurance broker and risk management firm operating across the UK, including Southampton, and supports a wide range of businesses with their insurance and risk needs. Each year, Gallagher gives colleagues the opportunity to support charities that are close to their hearts as part of its Making a Difference initiative and a total of 138 applications were received this year.

Pregnancy Sickness Support was nominated by Serena Mackay, Claims Handler at Gallagher, who was supported by the charity throughout her pregnancy. The charity supports women who are suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, a debilitating condition that can cause severe life-threatening complications during pregnancy due to excessive sickness. As well as advocating for women who are impacted by the condition, Pregnancy Sickness Support delivers key services to support women in the UK who are suffering from the condition including counselling and health advice.

The charity also aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with hyperemesis gravidarum amongst healthcare professionals so that women can access support more easily. Pregnancy Sickness Support delivers training and resources to doctors and healthcare professionals so that they are more informed on the issue and can offer the correct treatment to patients.

Alongside Pregnancy Sickness Support, Gallagher has donated a further £20,000 to four other small charities based in the UK including the OurJay Foundation, Onwards & Upwards, Wiltshire Treehouse and the Newquay Her Majesty’s Armed Force’s Veterans. This year, the winners are smaller charities who rely heavily on volunteers and will substantially benefit from Gallagher’s donations.

Serena said: “Pregnancy Sickness Support is an incredible charity and was my lifeline during my pregnancy when things became extremely difficult and overwhelming. The team at the charity supported me and helped me advocate for myself when I was struggling physically and mentally, and when I needed medical support.

“Supporting local causes and charities is a big part of what Gallagher does as a business, and I’m so happy to be able to show my appreciation through this donation. I’m truly grateful for everything Pregnancy Sickness Support has done for me.”

Charlotte Howden, CEO, Pregnancy Sickness Support, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this £25,000 donation, which will make a tangible difference to the lives of women suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. With some women suffering from PTSD as a result of the condition and finding it hard to access GP support, it is our mission to ensure they have crucial help when they need it.

“This funding will allow us to expand our lifesaving support services, including our national freephone helpline and specialist counselling, ensuring marginalised groups receive the care they deserve. It will also help us educate more healthcare professionals through expert training, improving treatment pathways and ultimately saving lives.”
