As climate-driven risks like wildfires, extreme heat, flooding, smoke events and prolonged power outages become more common, senior living communities must be designed for more than basic code compliance. Many residents rely on staff assistance and medical equipment, resilience must focus on protecting life, maintaining care operations and supporting emergency response during disruptive conditions.

Drawing on Gallagher's experience with senior living owners and operators, this paper explores three key resilience outcomes: survivability, operational continuity and defensibility. It also reviews the updated Enterprise Green Communities Criteria and outlines practical steps to strengthen shelter-in-place capability, fire containment, smoke protection and outage tenability, particularly for communities in the Wildland-Urban Interface.
