How Gallagher Teamed Up with the Dive In Festival for Diversity & Inclusion to Raise Mental Health Awareness in the Insurance Industry

In acknowledgment of World Mental Health Day, organizations around the world are putting a spotlight on the importance of mental health and wellness. And while this day is important for driving awareness and visibility, mental health is not a topic that should be visited only one day a year; it must be an ongoing dialogue, year-long. That dialogue is already underway in the insurance industry, with movements like Dive In leading the way.

Gallagher recently sponsored the annual Dive In Festival for Diversity & Inclusion in Insurance—supporting the development of inclusive workplace cultures in the insurance sector. The programming shed a light on expanding definitions of diversity and the emerging topics in inclusion, belonging, and wellness, including mental health.Through different events, resources, and discussions, the topic of mental health was at the forefront of the conversation—and Gallagher leaders were there to help drive it forward.

Mental health can be a difficult topic to raise, especially in a professional environment. That's why advocates within the industry are key to leading the charge. One of those advocates at Gallagher is Kristy Sands—Vice President, Marketing & Communications at Gallagher Bassett. Outside of her role at Gallagher Bassett, she has taken an active role in driving mental health and wellness awareness as liaison to the Dive In Americas Mental Health Committee.

We asked Kristy about her experience working with Dive In, and why mental health is such an important topic.

Like Kristy said, leadership within an organization is crucial for elevating the topic of mental health—and it is even more powerful when leaders collaborate across organizations. That's why Gallagher partnered with AXA XL and Clyde & Co for one of Dive In's Australian event, featuring keynote speaker Gus Worland—a mental health advocate, media personality, and founder of mental health initiative Gotcha4Life.

As an active advocate for mental health and wellness, Gus' personal background spoke to the festival's theme: "Active Allyship & Empowerment" from intention to action—encouraging a move from awareness to action and create measurable impacts. Here's what Gus shared about his session with Gallagher.

As Kristy and Gus continue to drive awareness around mental health and wellness, we are all welcomed in to play a role. With dialogue around diversity in all of its forms, we can better level the playing field in the insurance industry.
