Anesthesia has been a specialty of high focus in the past year as healthcare organizations seek to balance rising compensation with strong staffing practices. Gallagher conducted a pulse survey to gather data on operational norms and staffing trends. Responses from 50 organizations across the US, representing more than 1,400 physicians, were collected in December 2023. In this video, members of the Physician Compensation and Valuation Consulting team discuss the results and implications.

Key findings

  • Staffing practices are generally similar for employed and contracted anesthesia physicians, with similar requirements for supervising certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and annual on-site hours
  • 71% of organizations require employed anesthesia physicians to provide unrestricted call coverage, which may include subspecialty anesthesia call coverage in addition to general anesthesia call coverage
  • The median annual hours requirement for employed and independent physicians (excluding PTO) is 1,910d
