Business continuity managers have had a lot on their plates over recent months as the COVID-19 pandemic has affected businesses across the world. A number of companies have shared their experience of invoking their business continuity plans – and running into some unforeseen problems during lockdown.
COVID-19 and Business Continuity

IT equipment supply

The nationwide scramble for end-user equipment to meet the huge demand for home working had a major impact on supply. One organisation reported that their spare IT equipment would only stretch to accommodate business-critical staff, leading to a relaxing of the ‘bring your own devices’ policy, potentially giving way to a greater cyber security risk.

‘Own device’ mobile communications

The contingency plan for one firm was to forward calls from inbound PBX numbers to an emergency mobile phone, take messages and have employees use their own communication devices to make calls back to the customers. This not only caused a bottleneck, but led to issues such as poor signal, the absence of a corporate number on outbound calls, and the inability to perform call reporting.

Software licencing restrictions

An organisation in the property sector initiated their business continuity plan and staff were asked to install security software on their own devices. However, licensing restrictions did not accommodate the number of concurrent users and the helpdesk was overwhelmed. The remedy required upgraded servers and network equipment, creating an IT infrastructure project in the middle of an operational crisis.
