An opening day hat trick helped Bath Rugby scrum-half Ben Spencer edge the public vote to be crowned Gallagher Player of the Month for October.

Spencer beat Exeter Chiefs playmaker Henry Slade to the award by the narrowest of margins, with just one vote separating the England international duo.

Gloucester Rugby No.8 Zach Mercer, a summer arrival from Montpellier, and Exeter Chiefs rising star Greg Fisilau were also selected to be on the four-person shortlist after an impressive start to the 2023/24 campaign for the back row pair.

Spencer was an ever-present in the club’s October fixtures, missing only nine minutes of the action, and the Bath captain led his side to finish the month at the top of the Gallagher Premiership table.

The experienced No.9 also contributed four points from the tee and looks set to forge a mouth-watering half-back partnership with Scotland and British & Irish Lions fly-half Finn Russell at The Rec this season.

“Bath have shown strong form on the pitch so far this season in the Gallagher Premiership, with Ben leading the charge as Captain. He has proved to be an integral part of Johann van Graan’s squad and shown dedication and professionalism on and off the pitch”

The shortlist was voted for by a panel of media professionals.
